Tasmanian not-for-profit St Lukes has announced its support for the Big Tassie Walk – a statewide initiative that promotes movement, connection and community wellbeing.
The partnership with the Migrant Resource Centre Tasmania (MRC Tas) aligns with St Lukes’ vision to make Tasmania the healthiest island on the planet — a goal rooted in the belief that connection and inclusivity lead to stronger health outcomes.
As part of its commitment, St Lukes will contribute a $5000 donation and has set a collective step goal for its participating staff, who will be taking part across the state in October.
The initiative reflects St Lukes’ broader mission to champion health in every form — physical, mental, and social.
“St Lukes has a vision to make Tasmania the healthiest island on the planet, and we know when people feel a sense of belonging and connection, they are more likely to live fulfilling lives,” St Lukes CEO Paul Lupo said.
“The Big Tassie Walk exemplifies this philosophy. By walking together, Tasmanians strengthen bonds, build resilience, and take meaningful steps toward better wellbeing.
"We love this initiative, because it encourages people to get active and challenge themselves, while coming together to support the incredible work of MRC Tas.”
The Big Tassie Walk builds on the success of two high-profile walks led by MRC Tas Chair, the Hon. Peter Gutwein last year, and encourages individuals, workplaces and community groups to walk for fitness and help shape a kinder, stronger Tasmania.
Quote from the Hon. Peter Gutwein, Chair of MRC Tas:
“The Big Tassie Walk is a powerful reminder that health and wellbeing are deeply connected to inclusion and community. This initiative is about more than steps — it’s about shaping a Tasmania where everyone feels seen, supported, and valued.”
Quote from Dr Gillian Long, Chief Executive Officer of MRC Tas:
“The Big Tassie Walk celebrates the incredible diversity of our island and the contributions of people from migrant and refugee backgrounds. We’re proud to partner with St Lukes and others who share this vision for a healthier, more connected future.”
St Lukes encourages all Tasmanians to join the Big Tassie Walk. Participation is free and open to all, with a digital platform designed for participants to set goals, track kilometres and collect donations.
