Sensory inclusivity takes centre court at St Lukes Tasmanian Derby

Tasmanian not-for-profit St Lukes has joined forces with the Hobart Chargers to provide a more inclusive game-day experience, with the Chargers becoming the latest team to adopt St Lukes’ sensory packs.

The St Lukes Tasmanian Derby will take place this Friday, showcasing the state’s top NBL1 talent and rallying communities around their local teams.

St Lukes Head of Community Engagement, Nikki Long, said they were proud to partner with the Hobart Chargers as the third Tasmanian organisation to adopt St Lukes sensory packs.

“Just like the Tasmania JackJumpers, the Hobart Chargers have implemented St Lukes sensory packs – which include a weighted blanket, noise cancelling headphones, a fidget spinner, sunglasses and ear plugs – and are free to borrow for the duration of the game,” Ms Long said.

“We know the game day atmosphere can be overwhelming. Those with sensory challenges shouldn’t have to miss out on the excitement and the community connection that comes from backing their team.”

Ms Long said it was great to see basketball growing in popularity in Tasmania, particularly at the grassroots level of the NBL1.

“Sports such as basketball bring people together, and we know that strong social connections have a direct impact on healthy behaviours, as does feeling part of a team,” she said.

“We’re proud to connect to Tasmanians to the right services that make health and wellbeing easier, and by partnering with organisations such as the Hobart Chargers, we’re encouraging social connections that we know are critical in achieving our vision to make Tasmanian the healthiest island on the planet.”

The Hobart Chargers were thrilled to be teaming up with St Lukes, said head of Media and Communications, Justin Bryan.

“The Tasmanian Derby has been a staple event on the Tasmanian basketball calendar for over two decades, as the north and the south of our great island come together to compete and celebrate all things great about the sport of basketball,” he said.

“With a focus on giving everyone in the Tasmanian community a chance to be at their best and achieve their goals both on or off the court, the partnership between the Chargers and St Lukes reflects the values of both organisations as they look to improve pathways for all Tasmanians.”

The St Lukes Tasmanian Derby takes place at the Hobart Netball and Sports Centre on Friday 30th May. The women’s game tips off at 6pm, and the men’s at 8pm.
