St Lukes has welcomed the Tasmanian Government’s 20-Year Preventive Health Strategy, describing it as a significant step toward reshaping the state’s approach to health and wellbeing.
St Lukes CEO Paul Lupo said the strategy reflected an important shift from a health system focused on treating illness to one that actively supported Tasmanians to live healthier, happier lives.
“As Tasmania’s leading not-for-profit health and wellness organisation, St Lukes has a vision to make Tasmania the healthiest island on the planet, and this strategy aligns strongly with that ambition,” Mr Lupo said.
“We know from our own community engagement that when Tasmanians feel genuinely connected and supported – both to each other and to local services – health and wellbeing become a strength, rather than a struggle.”
Mr Lupo said St Lukes had long advocated for greater investment in prevention across all sectors.
“St Lukes has consistently championed the need for individual, community, business and government investment in prevention, because we know it’s the most effective way to tackle the health challenges facing our state.
“This strategy provides a solid foundation to deliver meaningful improvements over time, and we’re encouraged by the Government’s recognition that health and wellbeing extend well beyond hospital care.”
Mr Lupo said whole-of-government, business and community collaboration would be critical to the strategy’s success.
“The success of this strategy will depend on strong partnerships and collaboration between state and local governments, the private sector, and the broader health and community sectors,” he said.
“St Lukes is ready to partner with Government to drive the sustained effort this strategy demands, ensuring its intent translates into real, measurable improvements in health outcomes for all Tasmanians.
“By pooling our local expertise, resources and insights, we can design and deliver initiatives that genuinely reflect the needs and expectations of communities right across Tasmania.
“If we get this right, we have an incredible opportunity not only to address our biggest health challenges, but to create a healthier, more equitable future for all Tasmanians. St Lukes is proud to be part of that journey.”
