How is your oral health tracking?

Brush up on your oral hygiene routine for this year’s Dental Health Week!

We all know that over winter many people enjoy comfort eating to stay warm.

What most don’t know, is that 47.8 per cent of Australian adults report that they consume too much sugar, and only 51 per cent brush their teeth twice a day.

In Tasmania it is much the same with dental conditions being one of the most common primary diagnoses for potentially preventable hospitalisations among Tasmanians aged 25 to 34 years.

According to the St.LukesHealth Tasmanian Health Report, one third of Tasmanians in this age cohort rate their oral health as fair or poor, and more than half had not visited a dentist in the past year.

Unfortunately, this is not a recipe for good oral or general health!

Setting good routines and following a healthy lifestyle are largely within our control.

So, take control of your oral health by following these easy steps:

  1. Brush your teeth for two minutes, twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste.
  2. Clean in-between your teeth once a day using floss (small gaps) or interdental brushes (big gaps).
  3. Eat a healthy diet, low in added sugar.
  4. Visit your dentist once or twice a year for a check-up.
